I Was Thirteen When the Forging Began
My name is Ion Nicolae Blum. Born in Bucharest to a family of storytellers, my father a journalist and novelist, my mother an award winning film director. In June 1990, political violence tore my family apart. I was sent to Zurich alone while my mother sought asylum through Montreal, separated for a year with no end in sight. I arrived in Canada at fourteen, no language, no purpose handed to me. What I got instead was heat. Heat is where forging begins.
The forging became building. At twenty two I opened my first venture. Over the next twenty five years: seven companies, five industries, $50M+ in revenue. My restaurant 350 Fahrenheit was featured in The Globe and Mail, the National Post, and the Toronto Star. Black Line Studio, which I led for eighteen years, was a finalist at the ARC Awards. I directed award winning films and crossed five Ironman 70.3 finish lines.
Then, one July morning, everything I'd built was gone. The fire had gone quiet long before the buildings did, I'd mistaken the noise of running my business for the frequency itself. What rebuilt me was the same sequence that carried a boy through Zurich and Montreal, this time understood and written down. One conviction has carried me since: the quality of our lives is in direct relation to the quality of the questions we dare to ask ourselves.
